Coloring Tutorial by whispwill Coloring Tutorial by whispwill
Hope this helps!

Here are some GIFs of the steps to make them easier to see: sta.sh/220fj736euzw

Though this is not my personal favorite, I chose what thought was the easiest method for creating a lovely digital illustration! I do use several other techniques however they are for more complicated and they yield similar results. Perhaps in the future I'll cover my digital painting and single layer, no multiply, coloring styles ; v ;

Hmm, it's not mentioned in this tutorial but what I like to do is paint the figure a solid color and then select "lock transparency" (or "lock alpha", depending on the program) in the layer properties and what that does is lock all the coloring you do on that later inside the original solid color. Basically, you can draw without worrying about going outside your lineart :)

thanks! huh, so like a clipping mask (photoshop)?

Well, kind of but it's different. When you lock the transparency only the colors you add ON THAT SAME LAYER will stay inside the lines (unlike a clipping mask). It is very useful to do on your lineart layer so you can color the lines different colors after you're done with coloring the rest of the drawing. Also, since it's called "lock TRANSPARENCY" say you didn't do a completely solid color but left some areas semi transparent. When you lock the transparency and go over those areas with another color, they'll remain semi transparent :)

ohhh, now this makes sense,  I was watching her latest stream and was trying to figure out how she was able to change the color of her lines so quick without it selected!

I think is just so you can see the colors better instead of coloring a light color on white or something

whispy if I can ask ; c ;
how did you create the solid base color layer ?
did you, for example, use the lasso tool or some selection and then fill it in from there?
because when I use my bucket tool, I find that the colors filled in doesn't fill 'up to' the line art, or rather, beside my line art there'z a little white.
I assume itz because my line art has a varying opacity to it (as the stroke fades away, the color just slightly lightenz and fades as well) and that might be the cause of my problem ; ;
I'm wondering if itz because I don't create a solid base I have this problem though ><
thank you so much for your time ;//;

Y'know I am always changing my approach to coloring. And I flip between using just colors without a greyscale shade to a style similar to what you have here. Usually I just add a step or process but it's usually quite similar.

Do you adjust opacity of the brush or of the layer when shading with multiply?
I feel like if I adjust the brush, I get a weird overlap when I make multiple strokes. But if I adjust opacity of the layer, it's hard to get a natural looking blend/gradient of shading.
